Andong is the largest city in Gyeongsangbuk-do Province with a population of about 168,000. Andong is the agricultural market center for the area. Andong is known as a center of culture and folk traditions, maintaining many of the ancient traditions.
The Hahoe Folk Village in Andong is the most notable folk village in South Korea listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Andong is also a home for many Confucian academies from the Joseon Dynasty. The notable examples of seowons, or Confucian academies are Dosan Seowon, Byeongsan Seowon, Imcheon Seowon, Gosan Seowon, Hwacheon Seowon and others.
